Immaculate Conception 2016

2016-12-08T15:07:31-06:00December 8th, 2016|Homilies of Father Abbot|

Vestimentum tuum candidum quasi nix…Thy garments are white as snow, and thy face is as the sun. (2nd Antiphon of Laudes).

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
My Very Dear Sons,

In contemplating the spectacle of the Immaculate Conception, such is the spiritual splendor and brightness of the vision, supposing we turn our soul toward this mystery with humility, such is the power of Mary’s immaculate radiance, that one might fear going “snow blind” so to speak, of being blinded for shear excess of light.  It is tempting for one who preaches to conclude (hastily) that there is nothing to say about such uniform whiteness, nothing to comment upon here, whereas in truth such beauty rightly considered, could feed our contemplation for year upon year, age upon age.  Our Lady’s light is not the […]

All Saints 2016

2016-11-01T10:30:15-05:00November 1st, 2016|Homilies of Father Abbot|

Post haec vidi turbam magnam…After this I saw a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and tribes, and peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne, and in sight of the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands (Apoc. 7:9).

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
My very dear sons,

The spectacle that fills our eyes—the eyes of our soul—on this feast of All Saints, as we contemplate the countless throngs of Saints presented in the liturgical readings from the Apocalypse, resonates not only in the mind, but also in our heart of hearts. This blessed vision represents the consummation of all things at the end of human History, where we ardently expect our own salvation and that of those dear to us. If there is a deeper […]

John Senior and the Restoration of Realism

John Senior and the Restoration of Realism, by Father Francis Bethel, O.S.B., Thomas More College Press, 452 pages.

Dear Friend of Clear Creek Abbey,

This book about John Senior and his teaching, penned by our Dom Francis Bethel, has been so long in coming—truly a lengthy labor of love—that its publication will come as no surprise to many who frequent Our Lady of Clear Creek Abbey. No one, I think, will lament the time spent in its preparation, as the subject matter is a serious one, demanding that we rise above the fleeting “busyness” of our contemporary saeculum, in order to catch a glimpse of a beauty that endures. Some things take time, especially if they have to do with eternity.

Father Abbot’s Message from Rome

The Conspiracy of Catholicity.

There is a grace about Rome, one that defies the centuries and the never ending attempts of darkness to overcome the light.  Even when the marble columns will have cracked and fallen to sand, the spiritual pillars of Catholic truth, drenched in the blood of the martyrs and more eloquent than that of Abel, will continue to proclaim the victory of the Lamb.  It has been a privilege for me to experience again that grace of being in Rome and of praying here, at the foot of the Apostles, for all the monks of Our Lady of Clear Creek and for all the friends of Clear Creek Abbey.

Assumption 2016

2016-08-15T10:30:48-05:00August 15th, 2016|Homilies of Father Abbot|

Blessed be the Lord who made heaven and earth, who hath directed thee to the mortal wounding of the head of the prince of our enemies (Judith).

On this glorious feast of the Assumption of Our Lady, many splendid and glorious things are presented to the eyes of our soul:  a woman clothed with the sun and the moon under her feet; the visit made by Mary to her cousin Elizabeth, when she intoned her Magnificat; the spectacle of angels rejoicing as they receive their Queen into the blessed precincts of Heaven; finally, the bride described in Psalm 44, adorned with gilded clothing surrounded with variety.  And all of these sacred images have a spiritual meaning, not only for the Church in general, but also for each one of us.  Let us explore a […]

Apostolic Anvil

Dear Friend of Clear Creek Abbey,

One need not be a prophet to read the “writing on the wall”—especially when the font is of bold type. In our day this ominous writing stands out ever more clearly against a background of cultural chaos and social angst. Some speak of an approaching “storm.” That may, indeed, be a fitting metaphor for the forces of destruction that are lashing out already in many directions.

It has been said that the Church is “an anvil that has worn out many hammers.” In the current context this comparison is especially reassuring. It means that however violently the tempest may beat down upon her, our Mother the Church, the Church of the Holy Apostles and Martyrs, will survive the crisis and live to see a new day, again […]

Construction Update

2016-07-09T16:20:36-05:00July 9th, 2016|News|

The construction of the Church apse and the first phase of the bell tower is now almost halfway complete.  All the concrete has been poured, and now the masons are busy building the circular chapels and will soon raise the transepts of the Church to their definitive height.  The project should be completed in the late fall, and enlarge the upper Church for our monastic liturgical ceremonies.  We are currently trying to raise enough extra funds to finish the inside of the sanctuary with brick and stone.  Thank you to all who have already contributed to help make this happen.  Please pray for this project, and give thanks with us to God for the many blessings He has poured out on Clear Creek Abbey. If you would like, you can donate online […]

Saints Peter and Paul 2016

2016-06-29T10:30:24-05:00June 29th, 2016|Homilies of Father Abbot|

O felix Roma, O thou most happy Rome, which by this glorious blood of thy two Princes, precious crimson flood, art made forever sacred…

Today, together with the Sovereign Roman Pontiff and the entire Catholic Church, we celebrate the glorious martyrdoms of Saints Peter and Paul. What a surprising and marvelous nobility is theirs!  One founded, not on birthright or military prowess, but on a Divine authority transmitted by grace; a nobility established, not by the spilling of other men’s blood, but by the spilling of their own.

What a surprising and marvelous nobility is that of Rome herself, city of the Apostles, city of the saints, as the hymn expresses it so well, O Felix Roma. O thou most happy Rome, which by this glorious blood of thy two Princes, precious crimson […]

Pentecost 2016

2016-05-15T10:30:05-05:00May 15th, 2016|Homilies of Father Abbot|

Emitte spiritum tuum et creabuntur, et renovabis faciem terrae.  Thou shalt send forth thy spirit, and they shall be created: and thou shalt renew the face of the earth. [1]

On this glorious feast of Pentecost the Holy Church makes repeated use of a verse from Psalm 103, one that is full of mystery.  We find it in the Alleluia verse and throughout the Divine office:  “Thou shalt send forth thy spirit, and they shall be created: and thou shalt renew the face of the earth.”  In the Latin version we use habitually the meaning is rather more dynamic: “Send forth thy Spirit, and they shall be created.” It is an appeal.

As we know from the book of Genesis, at the very beginning of time, when God created the Heaven and the […]
