The Spirit of Solesmes

by Sister Mary David Totah, O.S.B.

2016 Publication, 266 pages, 5.5 x 8.5 in., paperback

The French Abbey of Solesmes was one of the centers of monastic life and culture, famed for its Gregorian chant as well as it’s contributions to liturgical and spiritual renewal in the 19th and 20th centuries.

This book presents a coherent view of the Christian life as expressed in the writings of three of Solesmes’ most important figures: Dom Prosper Guéranger, Mother Cécile Bruyère and Dom Paul Delatte. All three are concerned with the life of prayer, the liturgy, participation in the Church as communion of saints, the mysteries of love and suffering – the whole spectrum of Christian life – as well as themes pertaining more directly to the religious life. These writings reveal a spirituality which is luminous, penetrating, practical, and a passion for what Dom Delatte calls “the transforming power of the truth.”

The strength, relevance and humor of these three Solesmian figures will come as a pleasant surprise to many. Most of these writings appear in English for the first time.
