About the Author:
Born in the diocese of Autun in 1896, Léon Robert entered the novitiate of the Benedictine Abbey of Solesmes in France in 1919. In fragile health, he made his profession as a regular oblate on October 12, 1924 and was ordained a priest in 1930; by indult of the Holy See, he was able to make his solemn profession in 1935.
As far as his strength allowed him, he zealously followed the monastic observance. His vast culture and his subtle humor gave his courses in the history of the Church and his conferences to the Friends of Solesmes a flavor that became almost legendary. A chronicler, he excelled in describing events with a lively pen and a very lively style. During the Second World War, his paintings of daily life at Solesmes brought his brothers held far away by a long captivity a much-needed comfort.
Loved by all for his brotherly charity, he was the joy of the monks’ recreations and walks. He felt death coming and prepared for it. Indeed, the Lord suddenly called him to Himself: he was in his seventy-third year (1969).
